Hong Kong Productivity Council unveiled the results of the 1Q20 "Standard Chartered Hong Kong SME Leading Business Index" survey. The Overall Index rose to 33.1 from 31.4 last quarter (up by 1.7), with all five sub-indices edging up, indicating SMEs' are slightly building up confidence in the business environment stepping into 2020.

However, Standard Chartered found the retail industry sub-index rather disappointing, being the only sub-index logging a historical low quarterly. This illustrated SMEs' expectation for tough times ahead given ongoing social unrest and plummeting number of tourists to Hong Kong.

825 Hong Kong SMEs were surveyed from mid-to-late December 2019.
