More than 800 well-known figures, including Apple (AAPL.US) co-founder Steve Wozniak, former chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen, "godfather" of modern AI Yoshua Bengio, and top AI safety expert Stuart Russell, have signed a public statement calling for a pause in the development of "superintelligence", according to foreign media reports.

The statement warns that the prospects of superintelligence have "raised concerns, ranging from human economic obsolescence and disempowerment, losses of freedom, civil liberties, dignity, and control, to national security risks and even potential human extinction".
