In an interview with a newspaper, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Health, Lo Chung-mau, revealed that the government plans to tighten tobacco control, with the first phase of a ban on possessing e-cigarettes and other alternative tobacco products set to begin as early as April 1, 2026. Addressing the tobacco industry’s criticism that the upcoming "10 measures for tobacco control" and flavored tobacco ban deprive citizens of choice, Lo countered that the fact that tobacco companies add flavors to products as "sugar-coated poison" and make it harder for smokers to quit is depriving their right of choice. Lo also highlighted that the crackdown on illicit tobacco is a key focus, with trials for duty-paid tobacco identification labels expected within 2025 and a related regime to be enforced in 2026.
