California’s 2024 Econ Excels Japan, Ranking as World’s 4th-Largest

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the state’s nominal GDP in 2024 whopped US$4.1 trillion, surpassing Japan’s US$4.02 trillion to rank as the fourth-largest economy globally, according to recent data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).

California trailed only the United States (US$29.18 trillion), China (US$18.74 trillion), and Germany (US$4.65 trillion).
