Hong Kong's Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau (FSTB) stated in a document submitted to the Legislative Council that regarding the proposed hike in the air passenger departure tax (APDT) from $120 to $200, it has no intention to adjust the rate of increase or implement it in phases. The FSTB pointed out that the last time the APDT was raised was in 2003, and cumulative inflation of about 64% since then makes the current increase comparable. As the $80 increase only accounts for a small portion of the overall travel expenses for both visitors and local residents, the FSTB believes the hike is reasonable and affordable.
