China plans to increase its strategic reserves of key industrial metals this year, targeting cobalt, copper, nickel, and lithium for government purchases, Bloomberg quoted people with the knowledge of the matter. The move aims to bolster the resilience of critical mineral supplies amid the energy transition and escalating geopolitical tensions. The Chinese authorities have purportedly begun price inquiries and sought bids for some metals. Earlier this month, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) had stated in a report to the National People’s Congress (NPC) that China will speed up the implementation of its annual strategic material stockpiling tasks.
