As markets react to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, the risk of a U.S. economic recession is uncomfortably high and rising, opined Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s. For now, he gauged the likelihood of a U.S. recession at below 50%, but the outcome hinges on Trump’s future actions.

If Trump persists with his tariff agenda, including imposing reciprocal tariffs on other countries, and these measures remain in place for 3-5 months, it will be sufficient to thrust the U.S. economy into a recession, said Zandi, who does not rule out the possibility that Trump may eventually decide that the tariffs have gone "enough."
