German carmaker Mercedes-Benz launched its affordable electric private car, CLA, with selling price starting from around EUR50,000 (about $420,000), in a bid to compete with models from Tesla (TSLA.US) and BYD COMPANY (01211.HK). Mercedes-Benz will begin production of the EV in the coming weeks, while sales will begin in early summer. The EV is about EUR10,000 (approx. $84,000) more expensive than Tesla's similarly-sized Model 3, but is likely to benefit from purchases by users unhappy with Elon Musk's political stance.
