TENCENT (00700.HK) procured H20 chips worth billions of RMB from Nvidia (NVDA.US) to accelerate the development of foundation model applications, Chinese media outlet Caijing reported.

A source from Alibaba Cloud cited in the report stated that Tencent’s recent large-scale acquisition of H20 chips is primarily aimed at meeting the demand for integrating DeepSeek into WeChat.

Prior to DeepSeek’s surge in popularity, Tencent lacked a clear strategic focus for foundation model development, with multiple business units operating their own research teams and an initial emphasis on leveraging AI to enhance internal operations, according to a person close to Tencent.

Within the two-week period from February 15 to March 1, Tencent completed several key initiatives, including the integration of DeepSeek-R1, deployment of the new Hunyuan T1 model, incorporation into WeChat search, image analysis capabilities, and coordinated deployment across multiple applications.
