China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOC) and other relevant departments summoned Walmart (WMT.US) for a meeting yesterday (11th) to investigate claims that the retailer may be pressuring Chinese suppliers to lower prices, "Yuyuan Tantian", a new media news column under CCTV, cited informed sources revealing. Walmart, according to U.S. media reports, recently demanded deep price cuts from some Chinese suppliers, allegedly attempting to shift the burden of the U.S. government’s latest round of tariffs on China onto Chinese suppliers and consumers. Estimates suggested that approximately 60% of Walmart’s globally sourced goods currently originate from China.
