Global sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) surged 49% YoY to 1.2 million units last month, though they fell 3% MoM, influenced by the Chinese New Year holiday, according to research firm Rho Motion. EU tariffs on Chinese EVs have impacted sales of these vehicles in the region, the agency noted. Sales of SAIC-made vehicles from China in Europe and the European Economic Area between November last year and January this year sagged 19% on average compared to the January-to-October period last year. Other brands producing EVs in China, including Honda, Mercedes-Benz, GEELY AUTO (00175.HK), Tesla (TSLA.US), Renault, Dacia Spring, NIO-SW (09866.HK), and XPENG-W (09868.HK), also saw their European sales affected by the tariffs. In contrast, BYD COMPANY (01211.HK) made progress in European sales and expanded its global market share. In North America, sales of related vehicles last month gained 17% YoY. However, U.S. President Donald Trump’s stance is expected to influence forecasts for sales growth in the U.S. Meanwhile, Mexico’s EV market more than doubled, driven by an influx of Chinese EVs starting last year.
