At the World Governments Summit 2025 in Dubai, Joseph Tsai, co-founder and chairman of BABA-W (09988.HK)(BABA.US), was quoted by Sina Tech as saying that there is fierce competition for AI at the moment. DeepSeek is of great significance to the industry because it dramatically reduces the cost of training and reasoning for large language models (LLMs) through engineering innovation. Many problems need to be solved with AI, which improves productivity and generates economic benefits. Tsai underscored that DeepSeek allows the public to witness the value of open source. Now if the sole purpose of developing AI is to build a closed-source, like the smartest PhD student and the kid who can win a Nobel Prize system, Tsai saw almost zero value in that approach.
