Robin Li, founder, chairman and CEO of BIDU-SW (09888.HK)(BIDU.US), remarked at the World Governments Summit in Dubai that artificial intelligence (AI) is completely altering the digital industry landscape and reshaping the way humans interact with technology. When asked whether the launch of DeepSeek had prompted the market to rethink whether large investments in AI would be needed in the future, he replied that when a technology develops at such a brisk pace, ongoing investment is necessary to maintain a leading position in the industry and at the forefront of technology. He believed that there is still a strong need for massive investments in silicon, computer computing, information technology and cloud infrastructure. In the past, due to computing limitations, Chinese technology companies had to innovate in order to reduce training costs, Li said. Currently, the cost of reasoning with large language models (LLMs) has been chopped by more than 90% in 12 months, which is faster than the development over the past few decades. However, no super-application for individual users has yet been seen, and there is still room for improvement in terms of user stickiness for AI chatbot apps on the market. Speaking of concerns about the development of AI, he said that Baidu's self-driving travel service “Apollo Go” is the embodiment of the application of AI in daily life, but in parallel, people's tolerance for accidents involving self-driving vehicles is relatively low.
