Panama Formally Informs CN of Withdrawal from 'BRI', Concerned on CN Investment in Panama Canal

Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino announced that Panama has formally notified China of its decision to withdraw from the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), while also expressing concern over China's investment in the Panama Canal.

Mulino assured the U.S. official that Panama is conducting a full review of the operations of Hutchison Ports, a subsidiary of CKH HOLDINGS (00001.HK), and will take action if the results showed any improprieties, but ruled out unilaterally revoking CKH’s right to operate the port.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian earlier said that the U.S. has recently made irresponsible remarks on the Panama Canal issue, deliberately misinterpreting and even attacking and smearing the cooperation. China is vigorously opposed to such behavior and has made serious representations to the U.S..
