US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited abroad for the first time since he took office. Rubio said after he arrived in Panama on Saturday (1 Feb) that the US will defend its rights under the Panama Canal Treaty if Panama does not take action to expel Chinese-connected companies on the Panama Canal, believing that China's current position of influence and control over the Panama Canal region poses a threat to the canal, and represents a violation of the Treaty Concerning the Permanent Neutrality and Operation of the Panama Canal. The US government is of the view that the present situation is unacceptable. All companies registered in Hong Kong had to operate in accordance with the laws of Hong Kong and local regulations (if outside Hong Kong), and that the HKSAR Government had never interfered with the commercial operation of Hong Kong firms, Hong Kong media quoted the HKSAR Government as saying. The government criticized the allegations made by the US officials on the operation of the Panama Canal as unjustified and wrest facts, and expressed strong dissatisfaction with and opposition to such allegations.
