Apple (AAPL.US) lost its position as the largest smartphone seller in China last year, overtaken by Chinese competitors Huawei and Vivo in market share, according to data released today (16th) by market research firm Canalys.

Last year, Apple recorded its largest YoY decline in sales in the Chinese market, with all four quarters showing a decrease, including a nosedive of 25% in 4Q.

This was Apple's worst annual performance in the Chinese market, said Canalys analyst Toby Zhu. Apple's high-end status faced multiple challenges, including Huawei's continuous launch of flagship phones, upgrades in domestic foldable phones in high-price segments, and Android brands like XIAOMI-W (01810.HK) and Vivo building customer loyalty through technological innovation.
