US Commerce Secretary: TSMC Initiates Production of 4nm Chips in US

In an interview with Reuters, US Commerce Secretary, Gina Raimondo, said that TSMC (TSM.US)'s Arizona plant has begun production of 4nm chips, marking the first-ever production of 4nm chips on American soil and by US workers.

In November 2024, The US Department of Commerce confirmed a US$6.6 billion subsidy for TSMC to produce chips in Phoenix, Arizona. In April 2024, TSMC agreed to increase its investment there by US$25 billion to a total of US$65 billion and to add a third factory in Arizona by 2030.

The Company will start 2nm chip production at a second Arizona factory in 2028, and agreed to use the most advanced “A16” chip manufacturing technology there.

The US Department of Commerce also hiked its low-cost loan to TSMC to US$5 billion.
