JP 2024 BEV Sales Fall 33%; BYD COMPANY Sales Rise 54%, Surpassing Toyota

The Japan auto sales corporation industry group announced that overall sales of BEV in Japan fell 33% YoY to 59,736 units in 2024, the first decline in 5 years, according to The Nikkei.

By automaker, Nissan's BEV sales decreased 44% YoY to 30,749 units, the lowest since 2021, accounting for 40% of Japan's BEV market. Sales of other Japanese BEVs were also sluggish, with Toyota's sales dropping 30% to 2,038 units. The sales of its first mass-produced BEV, the bZ4X, increased by only 10% to 1,012 units.

BYD COMPANY (01211.HK) ranked fourth in Japan, with sales of 2,223 BEVs, up 54% YoY. Tesla (TSLA.US)'s sales in Japan rose 3% to 5,600 units last year, while the sales of South Korea's Hyundai inclined 24% YoY to 607 units.
