Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD COMPANY (01211.HK), as stated by Brazilian labor inspector Liane Durao, brought hundreds of Chinese workers to Brazil with irregular visas for factory construction, according to Reuters. BYD has pledged to comply with labor laws for the remaining workers staying in the country.

Last month, 163 workers employed by BYD's contractor Jinjiang were found by Brazilian labor authorities to be working under "slavery-like conditions". These workers have either left or are in the process of leaving Brazil after being rescued by labor authorities. Durao said that BYD will be fined for each worker's case, but the amount of the fines was not disclosed.

The report also quoted sources close to BYD as saying that the company believed the visas were issued correctly and that all employees voluntarily chose to work in Brazil.
