Thailand Intends to Legalize Online Gambling; Formal Study Expected to be Completed within Mths

The Thai government will begin preliminary discussions on promoting the legalization of online gambling in Thailand, Bangkok Post quoted Thai Deputy Prime Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong as revealing.

Since the legalization of online gambling still requires the passage of a number of legal amendments, the Minister urged officials from all relevant units to begin simultaneous discussions. It is expected that the formal study of the relevant plan will be completed in the next few months.

He acknowledged that while online gambling is associated with many of the social ills and criminal behaviors of Thai youth, as well as with the rise in the opening of correspondent bank accounts and fraudulent puppet accounts, there is a large amount of money flowing through online gambling platforms on a daily basis, which, if properly taxed locally, will be boon to the economy.
