On 1 January 2025, the cost of booking a 40-foot container from Asia to the US West Coast was US$6,000, up 50% from US$4,004 a month earlier, according to data from Xeneta, an Oslo-based freight platform, according to Bloomberg. The rate to the US East Coast was US$7,100, up 31% from a month earlier.

The threat of a strike at US East and Gulf Coast ports later this month, as well as US President-elect Donald Trump's promise to impose higher import tariffs on goods from China and other major trading partners, caused enterprises to worry and increase their inventories, the report added.
