The HKD jumped to a 3.5-year record high on surging demand at year-end. Yesterday (30th), USD/ HKD touched 7.7609, a new high since June 2021, bringing its gain in December to 0.3%. Today (31st), USD/ HKD last printed at 7.7620. Moreover, the Hong Kong Interbank Offered Rate (HIBOR) hiked to 6.50357% overnight, setting an all-time high. The rise in HIBOR could be attributed to the tightening of HKD liquidity at the end of the year, coupled with lower aggregate balance of Hong Kong, Ken Cheung, chief Asian foreign-exchange strategist at Mizuho Bank, said.
