UBS Investment Bank Hong Kong strategist Chan Chi-lap projected the Hang Seng Index and MSCI Hong Kong Index to hit 20,000 and 8,400 respectively by the end of 2025, corresponding to flat index returns.

Chan said that Hong Kong bourse is expected to meet hurdles in 2025, with real GDP growth in Hong Kong and mainland China expected to ease. In addition, in light of the heightened geopolitical risks, the risk premium on stocks is likely to rise.

Chan upheld a defensive view until there is considerable additional policy support from mainland China, and was bullish on beneficiaries of interest rate cuts, industries that are immune from the mainland economy, and individual residential property developers that may benefit from population inflows.
