On the Hong Kong government's earlier comment that the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTPC) and Cyberport's parks are more suitable for drone landing and takeoff points, Yan Yan, head of drone public affairs at MEITUAN-W (03690.HK), said the company is actively watching for a pilot project in the relevant “regulatory sandbox”, in the hope that MEITUAN-W can become one of the first companies to operate drone flights in Hong Kong.

In Yan’s view, the company can be stationed at the HKSTPC and the Cyberport parks first, having conducted preliminary discussions. It was noted that the HKSTPC and the Cyberport also welcomed the foray of MEITUAN-W.

She hoped that drone routes could be extended to more densely populated areas such as Central or Kwun Tong in the long run. KeeTa, a subsidiary of MEITUAN-W, has been developing in Hong Kong for more than a year and has accumulated a lot of experience and data on actual delivery scenarios, which are expected to be instrumental for the future operation of drones in Hong Kong.

Currently, MEITUAN-W has drone routes for delivery in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, with Shenzhen as the core. As of the end of September 2024, MEITUAN-W operated about 40 drone routes in Shenzhen. Yan said that about half of the 40 routes were opened in 2024.
