KMB and Citybus applied to Transport Department (TD) for fare hikes again this year, with increases of 6.5% and 9.5% respectively. A spokesman for TD responded that some franchised bus operators had submitted applications for fare adjustments to the government earlier in 2024, and the government was vetting the applications in accordance with the procedures. In the process, TD would consult the Panel on Transport and the Transport Advisory Committee of the Legislative Council in a timely manner, before submitting the applications to the Executive Council for consideration, said the spokesman. The spokesman added that the government would handle these applications in a prudent manner. In assessing fare adjustments, the government would take into account the future costs, revenues and returns of the operators, in addition to the acceptability and affordability of the public and the quality of bus services.
