HKEX (00388.HK) launched weekly stock options today (4th), including HSBC HOLDINGS (00005.HK), HKEX (00388.HK), PING AN (02318.HK), TENCENT (00700.HK), BABA-W (09988.HK), MEITUAN-W (03690.HK), BYD COMPANY (01211.HK), JD-SW (09618.HK), BIDU-SW (09888.HK) and KUAISHOU-W (01024.HK).

David Lutz, Senior Vice President of Equities Product Development at Equities Division of HKEX, said that the selection of the above stocks majorly hinges on the volatility of the stocks, because investors do not need to hedge against short-term risks if the stock shows less volatility.

He said that weekly stock options are characterized by greater precision, efficiency and flexibility, which can allow investors to accurately operate in response to a single event, such as before the announcement of results. The short expiration time of the options also means lower subscription costs for investors.

According to HKEX data, as of September 27, the number of contracts was 4.3 million, and there have been 15 trading days with more than 1 million contracts traded year to date, setting the highest in a decade.
