Regarding the European Union's (EU) proposal to impose additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle (EV) imports, China's Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao held a video conference with European Commission Executive Vice-President and Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis last Friday (25th).

The negotiations reached an important consensus for further consultations, according to a post on the Weibo official account of CCTV's Yuyuantantian. Even if the EU makes a final decision on Wednesday (30th) as scheduled, China can continue negotiations with the EU to cancel the tariffs.

In the new phase of consultations, the core principle is for both parties to continue adhering to price commitments as a solution. Price commitment means that both parties determine through equal consultation an acceptable minimum export price for Chinese EVs to Europe, with exporters committing not to export below this price.

The post also mentioned that the prerequisite for reaching a price commitment agreement is mutual trust between the parties. However, the EU apparently lacked trust and sincerity in earlier negotiations. It bypassed the Chinese government and negotiated individually with certain companies, attempting to delay negotiations to gain more leverage.

China has made its stance clear that if the EU insists on obstructing the negotiation process, it must recognize the potential consequences, which could end up directly impacting European car companies.
