The Second Standing Committee of the Macau Legislative Assembly signed an opinion paper on the "Law on Combating Gambling Crimes", which will be submitted to the plenary session of the Legislative Assembly for deliberation and voting after the session resumes this month, according to a report by the Macau media. The bill is proposed to take effect from the day after its publication.

President of the Second Standing Committee of the Legislative Assembly of Macao, Chan Chak Mo, said after the meeting that the bill proposes to increase the prison terms for gambling-related crimes and extend the maximum duration of detention, allow searching of relevant residences at night, introduce an "undercover system" to investigate illegal gambling, and criminalize illegal currency exchange, commonly known as the illicit money exchange.

He also pointed out that the bill clearly specifies that operating a money exchange business for gambling purposes without legal approval within casinos and their ancillary facilities is a crime. Even if it is on the street or elsewhere, as long as the criminal investigation units have evidence to prove that it involves exchange for gambling, it is also classified as a criminal offence.
