Ford Motor (F.US) CEO Jim Farley informed board members after his recent visit to China that the Chinese industry’s use of AI and other technologies in automobiles is vastly different from existing US technologies, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Farley noted that the Chinese industry is beating competitors on price with low-cost supply chains and aggressively expanding into overseas markets. The rapid advancement of the Chinese industry poses an "existential threat" to Ford, he added.

The report mentioned that following his visit to China, Farley transported several Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) to Michigan, USA, for company executives and board members to test drive, including brands like XIAOMI-W (01810.HK) and LI AUTO-W (02015.HK). Farley emphasized that meeting Chinese standards will become the top priority.

Farley is also reported to have decided to focus the company’s efforts in China on commercial vehicles. Ford is also exploring partnerships with low-cost component suppliers that give Chinese EV manufacturers a significant advantage, with a strategic shift towards small EVs.
