On June 18, Ding Xuexiang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council of China, met with Maros Sefcovic, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, in Brussels, Belgium, to hold the fifth China-EU High-Level Dialogue on the Environment and Climate, according to a report by the Xinhua News Agency.

Ding Xuexiang said that China and the EU have extensive common interests and huge room for cooperation in green transformation. He opined that both parties should effectively utilize the mechanism of high-level dialogue, seek common ground while reserving differences, and work in the same direction to maintain the positive momentum of environment and climate cooperation and deepen the China-Europe green partnership.

He emphasized that electric vehicles (EVs) are a symbolic product of green and low-carbon energy transformation. The EU's imposition of tariffs on China's EVs is typical protectionism, which is unfavorable to the EU's green transformation and undermines the overall situation of global cooperation on climate change.

China hoped that the EU will strengthen the consistency of its policies on environmental, climate and economic and trade cooperation with China, avoid delaying the progress of green transformation due to economic and trade frictions, and avoid setting up green barriers to interfere with normal economic and trade cooperation. Both sides should properly handle economic and trade frictions through dialog and consultation. China is determined to safeguard its legitimate interests.

Relevant departments of the two sides held dialogues and exchanges on issues such as coping with climate change and protecting the ecological environment, reviewed the effectiveness of pragmatic cooperation since the fourth high-level dialogue, and discussed the next steps for cooperation.
