Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim met last week with Berjaya Corp founder Vincent Tan and Genting Group Chairman Lim Kok Thay to discuss opening a casino in Johor's Forest City in a bid to revive the US$100 billion property project, Bloomberg News reported, citing sources.

Forest City is a project developed jointly by COUNTRY GARDEN (02007.HK) and the Johor state government in Malaysia in 2015. According to company documents, Malaysia's Supreme Head of State controls more than 20% of the joint venture. It is expected that members of the royal family or agents of the Supreme Head of State may also be invited to take a stake in the casino, with CG also hoping to open a casino in Forest City.

It is learnt that the talks are still at a preliminary stage and it is not yet clear what the Malaysian government's final stance is on the casino project, as it is possible that it may arouse objections from Muslims.
