In response to tariffs imposed and soon to be imposed by US President Donald Trump, the EU has a "strong plan" for retaliation, though it prefers to resolve the issue through negotiations, said EU executive chief Ursula von der Leyen in the European Parliament.

Von der Leyen said she understood the US argument that other countries are exploiting global trade rules, but she highlighted that the EU is also a victim. She also acknowledged the US desire for reindustrialization, which the EU also shares. Still, US tariffs are a tax on consumers that will drive up inflation, causing US factories to pay more for components and leading to fewer job opportunities.
