Apple (AAPL.US) had collaborated with BYD COMPANY (01211.HK) to develop long-range batteries for the now-canceled Apple Car project, laying the groundwork for today's battery technology, Bloomberg, citing sources, reported.

It is understood that Apple and BYD had secretly worked on developing a battery system using lithium iron phosphate cells around 2017.

The technology was designed to have a longer range and be safer than typical batteries at the time. However, Apple does not own any of the technology used in BYD's current Blade batteries.

BYD officially launched the Blade battery in 2020, which boasts over 50% higher volume utilization compared to traditional battery packs, translating to over 50% longer range.
