With regard to the so-called “reciprocal tariff” measures announced on 2 April, the US government was proud over the last weekend of the news that many countries were hoping to have conversations with the US, but frightened in the wake of the market crash, former US Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers said.

This kind of reckless improvisation is not an effective strategy, nor is it honest in its motivation, representing a sign of withdrawal from the bully.

It was sad to see the US following the policies of a “banana republic", Summers added. The US' trade policies have caused widespread concern that the new administration's tariffs, which are close to the levels of the 1930's when the US had a protectionist trade policy, are projected to cost middle-class families nearly US$2,000.

The US is also expected to be far away from a real economic recovery, with a significant damage to its reputation.
