US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told ABC News that he is unsure whether President Donald Trump has talked with Chinese President Xi Jinping directly, but believes the two leaders have a good, mutually respected relationship. He also mentioned that the current high tariffs are unsustainable for China's business model.

Although Trump had previously claimed multiple times that trade talks with China were underway, these statements have been denied by the Chinese government.

The US is currently negotiating agreements with 17 major trading partners, according to Bessent. Even though China is not among these countries, he could still see a path for talks with China. The first step is to ease tensions, and then reach an agreement in principle. The entire trade negotiation process could take several months.
