The US Department of Commerce (DOC) has added 25 Chinese companies to the trade restriction entity list, including ZhipuAI, a startup backed by BABA-W (09988.HK)  +1.050 (+1.203%)    Short selling $319.11M; Ratio 12.834%   and TENCENT (00700.HK)  +5.600 (+1.416%)    Short selling $309.01M; Ratio 5.410%   in developing large language models and accused by the US of advancing China's military modernization through cutting-edge AI research, according to Reuters.

The sanctioned companies also include SophGo, a company accused of selling TSMC chips to Huawei. SophGo has issued a statement clarifying it has never had direct or indirect business ties with Huawei.

Two Singaporean companies have also been added to the entity list. Without US government permission, companies cannot export goods and technology to entities on the list.

Meanwhile, the US DOC has tightened chip export controls to China, including 14 nm or 16 nm chips that can be used for AI applications.
