TSMC (TSM.US)      ’s biggest customer, Apple (AAPL.US)      , is in the process of verifying that the quality of its first batch of chips produced in Arizona is as good as Taiwan's, and the tests are nearing completion, Nikkei Asia reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

After completing the quality assurance process, the first commercial mass-production chips are expected to be shipped to Apple as soon as this quarter. TSMC has completed its own quality testing to ensure that these chips are ready for mass production.

TSMC is producing Apple's iPhone A16 Bionic processor on an advanced 4 nm process. Once the final validation process is completed, the first batch of chips will be ready for commercial mass production in another three months.

Apple is likely to become the first U.S. customer to use TSMC's U.S.-made chips, report told. While AMD (AMD.US)      and Nvidia (NVDA.US)      have also run some test production of chips at TSMC's Arizona facility. Yet, U.S.-made chips will have to be shipped back to Taiwan for packaging until TSMC's U.S.-based partner, Amkor Technology, completes its packaging plant.
