Hong Kong bourse was in depression in early session of the first trading day of 2025 (2nd) by opening 127 points lower this morning. With the decline stretched to 516 points, the HSI bottomed at 19,542. The smaller decline later posted the index at 19,818, down 241 points or nearly 1.2%, with $72.57 billion traded.

BABA-W (09988.HK)  +1.300 (+1.599%)    Short selling $879.08M; Ratio 18.383%   announced to sell its entire stake in SUNART RETAIL (06808.HK)  -0.170 (-8.586%)    Short selling $6.36M; Ratio 5.068%   , with an expected loss of more than RMB13.1 billion. SUNART RETAIL opened 14.9% lower, and then collapsed 35.5% once in early session. It bottomed at $1.6, notching an over-three-month low. It last traded at $2, down 19.4%, with $255 million traded. BABA-W last stood at $81.6, down 0.97%, with $ 1.465 billion traded. Morgan Stanley foresaw that SUNART RETAIL’s share price will react negatively to BABA-W’s disposal.

Both blue chips XINYI SOLAR (00968.HK)  +0.040 (+1.356%)    Short selling $57.26M; Ratio 32.999%   and XINYI GLASS (00868.HK)  -0.240 (-3.204%)    Short selling $52.22M; Ratio 43.302%   issued profit warnings. XINYI SOLAR tumbled nearly 8% before easing its slump. It last printed at $2.99, down 4.78%, with a turnover of $167 million. XINYI GLASS last charted at $7.69, down 2.53%, with turnover of $43.0013 million.

NEW WORLD DEV (00017.HK)  -0.090 (-1.786%)    Short selling $12.27M; Ratio 37.239%   , a local developer that had been earlier ousted from the blue chip family, set a record low of $4.97 again in early session. It last logged at $5.01, down 2.91%, with a turnover of $35.1468 million. CTF SERVICES (00659.HK)  +0.070 (+0.913%)    Short selling $756.18K; Ratio 21.521%   , under the same series, edged down 0.3% after it was rumored to be selling US$2 billion worth of toll road assets in mainland China to state-owned Yuexiu Group. Blue-chip CHOW TAI FOOK (01929.HK)  +0.100 (+1.536%)    Short selling $23.03M; Ratio 36.362%   also ebbed 1.8% to $6.61.
