Chinese President Xi Jinping recently accentuated during an inspection tour of Anhui Province that the fourth quarter's economic work must be executed well, that various policies determined by the Chinese central government must be implemented concernedly, and that efforts must be made to achieve the annual economic and social development goals, Chinese media cited.

Xi pointed out that it is necessary to accelerate technological innovation and industrial transformation and upgrading; build national laboratories and the Hefei Comprehensive National Science Centre at a high level, effectively leveraging high-level science and innovation platforms and strengthening key common technologies, cutting-edge leading technologies, modern engineering technologies and disruptive technological innovation; expand international science and technology exchanges and cooperation; and continuously enhance original innovation capabilities.

It is also essential to build a system and mechanism to support comprehensive innovation; coordinate and promote the integrated reform of the system and mechanism for science and technology talent development; improve policies and mechanisms for financial support of technological innovation; and promote the deep integration of the innovation chain, industry chain, capital chain and talent chain.

Xi added that China should safeguard the foundation of the real economy; accelerate the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries; expand strategic emerging industries; proactively plan for future industries; develop new productive forces in line with local conditions; and build internationally competitive advanced manufacturing clusters.

Collaboration is needed to reduce carbon emissions, cut pollution, increase green growth, and promote growth. Systematical promotion of ecological protection and restoration and ecological and environmental governance should be in place; and ability to prevent, mitigate and respond to disasters should be beefed up.
