BYD COMPANY (01211.HK)  +1.200 (+0.520%)    Short selling $110.38M; Ratio 27.770%   is launching its third electric vehicle (EV) in Japan, the "Seal" hybrid EV, which goes on sale today (25th) at a price of JPY5.28 million (about RMB240,000), with a battery capacity of 82 kilowatt-hours. The all-wheel drive version is priced at JPY6.05 million.

Last year, BYD registered only 2,206 new vehicles in Japan, way fewer than the 34,000 sold by Nissan's Sakura, Japan's most popular EV. Overall, BYD's sales in Japan shed 26% and 28% YoY in April and May, respectively.

The Seal's price in Japan is close to that of Tesla (TSLA.US)      's Model 3, said Atsuki Tofukuji, president of BYD Japan, adding that the company wants to be a frontrunner in EV field in Japan and plans to launch a new model every year in Japan.
