CNBC reported that Thailand, the world’s second largest exporter of rice, is encouraging farmers to plant less rice to save water, which may further exacerbate tensions in the global rice market.

Thailand's Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) said that in the face of low rainfall, farmers are being encouraged to plant crops that use less water and can be harvested quickly, so as to save water.

Surasri Kidtimonton, secretary-general of ONWR, said in a statement that the cumulative rainfall in Thailand was about 40% below normal level, which puts the country at high risk of water shortages. Thailand's water resources management needs to focus on water consumption, while agricultural water is mainly used for perennial crops.

Commercial Radio Hong Kong quoted Simon Wong Ka-wo, the President of Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants & Related Trades, as predicting that the price of white rice supplied to Hong Kong will be lifted substantially by 30%-50%, which will add pressure on the operation of eateries. He said that Hong Kong imports 200,000 tons of rice every year, which is a huge consumption.

Once the rice prices hike, as well as the price of related rice products, it will add the operating costs of eateries before the full recovery of the catering industry, which will ultimately have to be shifted to consumers.
