Jean-Marie Paugam, Deputy Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), warned on the 25th that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is disrupting fertilizer supplies, posing a dual threat of high food prices and food shortages to global food security.

Paugam, in an interview with Agence France-Presse in Yaound? Cameroon, stated that fertilizers are currently one of the most concerning issues. "Without more fertilizers in circulation, not only will production be affected, but prices will also be impacted," he warned. These effects are expected to intensify in the second year, with "reduced harvests and rising prices."

Following military strikes by the US and Israel on Iran at the end of February, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been continuously disrupted. This strait handles about one-third of the world's seaborne fertilizer trade. Meanwhile, natural gas, a key raw material for nitrogen fertilizer production, is primarily exported from the Middle East, which is a major exporter of urea and other common nitrogen fertilizers. Currently, agricultural powerhouses like Brazil are struggling to purchase Middle Eastern nitrogen fertilizers, and nitrogen fertilizer-producing countries like India and Pakistan are finding it difficult to acquire raw materials.

As the spring planting season is underway in the Northern Hemisphere, Paugam noted that the Middle East conflict has only lasted a few weeks so far, so there is no immediate fertilizer shortage. However, if the conflict continues to prevent fertilizers from being shipped out of the Gulf region, major grain-producing countries will be directly affected.

Paugam mentioned that if the Strait of Hormuz is blocked for three months, the impact will be very significant. He warned that net food-importing countries, especially most countries in West Africa and North Africa, will be in a very disadvantageous position.
