After the international gold prices swelled 27% last year to log the sharpest upswing since 2010, Wall Street banks continued to be bullish on the gold price trend this year. According to a survey conducted by the Financial Times, bankers and smelters interviewed on average expected the gold prices to rise another 7% this year to US$2,795/ oz by the end of this year.

Gold prices were expected to ride on the buying activities of central banks around the world as they gradually reduce their concentration in the US dollar since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022 and the imposition of sanctions on Russia by the US.

The anticipated deeper rate cut by the Fed this year; concerns about sky-high debt levels in the US after President-elect Donald Trump takes office; and the conflicts in Russia, Ukraine and the Middle East bode well for gold prices.

Henrik Marx, global head of trading at Heraeus Precious Metals, who expected international gold prices to set a record high of US$2,950 this year, added that Trump's second term in office may support gold prices. When he announces an increase in debts, which leads to a weaker US dollar and higher inflation, gold prices are usually favored. The World Gold Council (WGC) estimated gold prices to drift higher this year, but at a narrower rate YoY.
