Data released by the National Bureau of Statistics shows that in August, China's Manufacturing PMI fell to 49.1, down 0.3 ppts MoM. Sentiment within the manufacturing sector sentiment fell slightly, with sector activity within the contraction range for four consecutive months.

In terms of enterprise size, the PMI for large enterprises was 50.4, down 0.1 ppt MoM, but still above the 50-point threshold between contraction and expansion. The PMI for medium-sized and small enterprises was 48.7 and 46.4 respectively, down 0.7 ppt and 0.3 ppt. Of the five sub-indices that make up the manufacturing PMI, the industrial production index, the new orders index, the raw material inventory index, the employment index and the supplier delivery time index were all below the 50-point threshold.

At the same time, according to the data, the Non-Manufacturing PMI rose by 0.1 ppt MoM to 50.3 in August, signalling a slight pick-up in non-manufacturing sentiment. The Composite Output PMI was 50.1, down 0.1 ppt MoM and remained in the expansionary range, indicating that production and business activities of Chinese enterprises as a whole maintained a modest expansion.

Within the Non-Manufacturing PMI, the business activity index for the construction sector was 50.6, down 0.6 ppts MoM. The business activity index for the service sector was 50.2, up 0.2 ppts. From an industry perspective, the business activity indexes for rail transport, air transport, postal services, telecommunications, broadcasting, television and satellite transmission services, and culture, sports and entertainment were all above the 55-point mark, indicating higher sentiment. At the same time, business activity indexes for capital market services, real estate and residential services were below the 50-point threshold.

Within the Non-Manufacturing PMI, the new orders index and the selling price index were below the threshold, while the business activity expectation index was above the threshold.
